About MMFK
Who We Are
MMFK is a healthcare and educational consulting company
that was founded by Patricia
Burton, who is the mother of a special needs/learning
differences child, and who has over 24 years of experience
in the arenas of healthcare, nursing, administration, and
education. MMFK was founded to help families and
individuals by offering
insight and advice on matters concerning:
- Medically complicated and learning
differences/disabled children
- Advocacy, in both the healthcare and educational
arenas
- Formulation of a "Global View" approach to
addressing healthcare/education related needs
What We Do
MMFK approaches the challenges associated with
caring for special needs children from the big
picture or global perspective. Our consultation
is not intended to replace any advice you may receive from
a physician or specialist, but we do offer fresh
insight and advice that you may not find elsewhere. Our unique
approach synthesizes applied nursing principles and
experience, as well as the latest information on special
education, teaching, and administrative skills in order to
meet the needs of extraordinary children, children with
learning differences (LD), attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or multiple
disabilities (learning or medically related). The
services we offer include:
- Developing strategies for navigating through the
healthcare system -- providing suggestions on the
type of physician or specialist your child needs to
see, or what organizations you may contact for help
- Reviewing your child's treatment history --
if you are frustrated with the treatment your child
has received or is receiving, we will review your
child's unique history and advise and educate you
regarding your child's diagnosis or diagnoses and any
other avenues or possibilities that you may want to
consider
- Formulating a "Global View" treatment
management plan -- developing a treatment
management plan that documents your child's treatment
history, identifies various options for treatment, and
states your goals, hopes, and expectations for
treatment. Such a plan improves coordination and
communication between parents, PCPs (primary care
physicians), and specialists, and minimizes problems
such as repetition of tests, adverse effects from
mixing medications, and conflicting
treatments
- Developing strategies for navigating through the
educational system -- if your child has a learning
difference or disability, we can review their
educational plan (known in the public school system as
an IEP) and make suggestions about possible changes or
additions that may be made to the plan
- Filing ARD related complaints with the Texas
Education Agency (TEA) -- if you have already
attended multiple ARD (Assessment, Review, and
Dismissal) meetings regarding your child, but are not
satisfied that your child's needs are being met, we
can assist you in preparing the documentation required
by the TEA's complaint process
- Coaching and encouragement -- we provide
general advice and guidance for those who may feel
overwhelmed, frustrated, or alone in their experience
of working within the huge bureaucratic healthcare and
educational systems
